A lot of people like Free! Eternal Summer, and the Free! franchise in general, for the fanservice specifically directed toward those who appreciate the finely sculpted muscles of a man’s chest. I, on the other hand, have started to watch if for a different reason: that sweet, sweet food porn.
That’s right, folks, I’m along for the pretty animation and the gorgeous color palattes, but what really roped me in was the way Rin ate his breakfast sandwich.
Come on, that was the sexiest finger-licking I’ve ever seen, and I’ll happily go to war to defend my position. The artists and animators didn’t have to include that beautiful gush of egg yolk, spilling out over Rin’s thumb. They didn’t have to show him sucking it off his hand in a very suggestive way. They didn’t have to do those things, but they did, and so I would personally like to say thank you to the entire team working on the show. I would also like to make this sandwich to see if the egg drip is possible, if we could recreate it, and if the sandwich was any good.
First up: the process. It’s pretty simple–you fry up some ham and eggs, season them well, and slap them between two pieces of buttered toast. The best foods in life are the ones that take minutes to make but make your tastebuds sing, and a ham and egg sandwich is one of those things.
Next: the egg gush. Is it possible? Of course! Fry your eggs so they’re sunny side up, or juuust over easy. You want the white to be set, but the yolk to still be runny. As long as you crack them so and nudge the yolks to the outer part of the white, they’ll set perfectly. Then, place them into the sandwich so the yolks are long the edges, and prepare to grip the bundle of goodness so a yolk is right over your thumb.
Last: can we recreate the spectacular moment? YES. See the video below for evidence.
Does it taste any good? I mean, it’s an egg and ham sandwich, of course it tastes good! It’s not particularly healthy, though, unless you’re an athlete who desperately needs calories and protein, which this dish has in abundance. Is it worth making? One hundred percent. At the very least, you can have fun trying to get your friends to lick their fingers in a sexy way.
Watch the video below to see the full process.
Ingredients for Rin’s Breakfast Sandwich
(For One Sandwich)
-2 slices of bread
-Ham
-2 Eggs
-Salt and Pepper
-Butter/ Ghee/ Vegan Butter
To Make Rin’s Breakfast Sandwich
1. Heat a pan to medium high heat. When hot, place ham slice (or in my case, ham slices, stacked, into the pan.
2. Flip when slightly browned, about 3 minutes. Crack 2 eggs over the top of the ham, and season with salt and pepper. Let cook about 2 minutes.
3. Cover with a lid, lower heat to medium, and cook about 5-7 minutes, or until whites have set on top and are no longer translucent. Put toast in at this point.
4. Butter interior sides of toast. Remove ham and eggs from the heat, and top bottom sandwich slice. Finish with second piece of toast, and that’s it!
5. Enjoy with gusto, preferably by eating voraciously with your shark teeth *chomp chomp chomp*
