**In a 100% unrelated note to anime, can we all have a moment of silence for the death of 2NE1?? My first K-Pop love, gone. I am living in a world of tragedy. K, thx.**
Poco’s Udon World is a very, very cute show. It seems to be popular to write shows about guys taking in stray children, and then being changed for the better by their experiences raising those kids. Usagi Drop and Barakamon are notable-and lovable-examples of this. I wonder why that is. I know that Japan is trying to get husbands more invovled in child rearing and housework. They’re experiencing a sharp population decline, notably because most people don’t want to get married and have children, what with the desire to maintain their careers and stay unfettered and independent. So maybe these kinds of anime are romanticizing father involvement in child rearing? Maybe as a way to get people interested in being fathers? Or maybe just to provide a fantasy for girls who like to see guys do cute dad stuff. Who knows? All I can say for sure is that I tend to really love these kinds of shows, mostly because the kids are SO CUTE.
And Poco’s Udon World is almost unbearably cute. I really think the show gets by solely on Poco’s antics. You know, at least in other shows with the same premise, the kids can do more than eat food and babble incomprehensibly. That’s not to say I don’t like Poco’s Udon World-I do-but I think it’s funny that the show rides on the extreme cuteness levels of Poco and his **SPOILERS, SORTA** awesome ability to transform back into his tanuki self. I LOVE tanuki, I think they are adorable, Eccentric Family is one of my favorite shows ever. So the fact that Poco has this ability and uses it to up the whole guy-takes-in-a-kid-and-becomes-super-sweet premise… It makes the entire show a total hit for me. Also, was anyone else completely surprised by this? I didn’t see the opening when I watched the first episode, so I was SHOCKED when he went all tanuki on Souta. It was great! The last think I expected in an anime that is ostensibly about food was a tanuki character.
This recipe was requested by someone on a previous blog post. I’d never seen the show before that comment, but after checking it out I knew I had to make it. (I love making food you guys request- let me know if there’s something you want me to make!) This recipe focuses on bone-in chicken that Poco eats with Souta and Shinobu while they discuss family matters. I’ve never come across this kind of chicken in Japan, but it reminded me a lot of the chimek, a popular fried chicken/beer combination in South Korea. While I was traveling with my friends, we ate a lot of fried chicken with beer, and it was definitely a food highlight in SK. Wanting to bring back that flavor, I decided to give this recipe a go to recreate that experience.
Check out the video down below for the process! A list of ingredients is below the video.
Ingredients
This recipe is adapted slightly from this post here. Among small tweaks, I upped the number of chicken pieces, and left off the scallions to adhere more to the anime.
1 tbsp minced ginger
1/4 cup mirin
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce
1 tbsp rice vinegar
1 tbsp sesame oil
1 tsp togarashi
8 pieces of chicken- wings, thighs, drumsticks all ok here. Skin on!
