Crunchyroll #36: The Impossible 4 KG Steak from “Kuroko’s Basketball”

Learn how to make it here!

**

I was late celebrating Valentine’s Day. It was my fault. I told my SO that I didn’t want to eat out on Valentine’s Day- too crowded, too expensive, too much of a hassle. Plus, I prefer to make dinner. Unfortunately, on Valentine’s Day, I arrived home too late to cook, so we set dinner together for the weekend. With that settled, I only had one more task: Come up with a delicious menu.

My SO requested protein and I wanted to be fancy, so to me that meant steak. Preferably a huge, delicious steak. Preferably a steak that would be… unforgettable. I immediately thought of the giant steak the team in Kuroko’s Basketball eat together after a game when they’re in search of a free meal. This is the steak challenge they came accross:

Being a sad, uneducated American, I’m not exactly a whiz at the metric scale. 4 KG? What could this mean? I took to Google to get some answers.

Never have I been more Kuma SHOCKED. It turns out they were eating almost 9 POUND STEAKS. HOW COULD THAT BE!?!?! For one thing, that’s a LOT of steak to eat in one sitting and also, when was the last time you saw a 9 pound steak for sale? At least in my grocery stores (sadly we don’t have a proper butcher) this kind of item isn’t exactly common. Nonetheless, I wanted to make a steak so good it could be described as…

STEAKALICIOUS. Thanks for those subs, Crunchy. Nice work there.

Anyway, I’ve never made a giant steak before, so I wanted to give it a try. I set out to my grocery store to find the biggest steak I could possibly find, and settled on two T-Bone steaks, about 1.5 pounds each. Surprisingly, cooking giant steaks isn’t really hard at all as long as you get the procedure right, and don’t overcook it by accident (unless you like well-done steak). Coupled with some easy roasted veggies and some fresh bread, this made for a delicious, romantic, non-crowded and annoying Valentine’s Day dinner, for admittedly much less than we’d have paid for the same meal in a restaurant.

Check out the video below for a visual on instructions. Ingredients and picture instructions are listed just below.

Ingredients:

Steak:

  1. 1-2 1.5 pound steaks

  2. Salt

  3. Pepper

  4. Pats of butter

To Make:

1. Salt and pepper both sides of the steak. Preheat oven to 400 F.

2. Place a grill pan or frying pan over high heat. Melt butter into the pan, and, when hot, sear steaks, 4 minutes each side or until nice and browned. Do not move steaks around after placing them in the pan.

3. To finish off, place in the oven for 6-8 minutes or until cooked to desired done-ness. If you want exceptionally rare, it’s likely the pan will be enough. If you like it a bit more well done, place in the oven for required time. You can check done-ness by slicing into a thick part of the steak or testing by hand.

4. After finishing in the oven, let rest to let juices redistribute, about 10 minutes. Use this time to finish off preparing your side dishes.

5. And now it’s done!!! Garnish with a pat of butter for maximum deliciousness.
