Crunchyroll #81: Salmon in Foil from “Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family”

Learn how to make it here!

Lots of people have wanted to see our favorite anime characters in situations outside their normal show. I mean, this is why fanfiction exists – so that people can put their favorite characters into new and unusual situations. So it makes perfect sense to me that Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family is as popular as it is. It seems like everyone is charmed to pieces by it, and they love watching Shirou prepare food for the family, with good reason – the food in this show looks amazing.

If you’re not familiar with the original franchise, Fate/Stay Night is a series where the main character and his protector must battle it out in a massive war to basically become all-powerful. It’s pretty dark, violent, and harrowing, which makes this parody spin-off that much better. When you’re so used to seeing these characters in life or death situations, it is quite jarring to watch them enjoy a peaceful meal at home. At the same time, it’s so fun to see these characters you love doing normal, everyday things – including budget cooking!

Who else cooks on a budget? Right now I’m trying to live on $200 a month for food expenses (hahaha, key word is “trying”), so when I saw Shirou counting his coins in the second episode, I found I could relate on a deep personal level. To make things better, the ingredients for this dish are actually really inexpensive. I spent about $5 per serving – including sides (rice and miso), which is pretty cheap for a meal that is both hefty and delicious. Of course, on my $200/month food budget, it’s a little tight, BUT, for fresh salmon, this was totally worth the splurge. The salmon is the most expensive part – the only other things you really need to buy are the vegetables. If you don’t have a consomme cube at home already, a bouillon cube would work as well, or you can stick with regular old salt and pepper to cut costs even more.

The best thing about this recipe is how seriously easy it is to make. The most work goes into prepping the vegetables. After that, it’s just a matter of layering everything up and topping the whole thing with a pat of butter. Throw it in a pan and allow everything to steam in their own juices and BAM, it’s done. Easy. And impressive. Make this for your significant other – you won’t regret it. Unless one of you has a seafood allergy. In that case, don’t eat this, and don’t blame me if something goes medically wrong.

I really hope you can try this out! Watch the video below to get more pointers on how exactly to make this dish!

Ingredients for Foil-Wrapped Salmon

Makes 4 Servings

4 1-inch thick salmon filets

2 tbsp sake

Salt and pepper

1 yellow onion, cut thinly

2 carrots, cut into matchsticks

6 oz Shimeji mushrooms, separated

2 consomme or bouillon cubes (1/2 per each filet)

4 pats of butter (1 per each filet)

Japanese Mayo

Wasabi

Freshly chopped parsley, garnish

To Make Foil-Wrapped Salmon

1. Marinate salmon by sprinkling with sake and salt. Allow to sit, at least ten minutes, to draw out all the moisture.

2. While salmon marinates, prepare all your veggies – thinly slice onion. Cut carrots into matchsticks. Separate mushrooms. Prepare the wasabi mayo by combining mayo and wasabi together in a 2:1 ratio, or to taste. Set mayo aside.

3. Pat salmon dry, and season again with salt and pepper.

4. Pull out a sheet of foil. Pile 1/4 of onions on, then 1/4 of carrots. Sprinkle over 1/2 of a consomme cube. Then place 1/4 of the mushrooms, and 1 salmon filet over top. Top with a pat of butter. Fold up the foil to make a package. Repeat with the three remaining filets.

5. Heat a pan to medium high heat (you will need two pans to do them all at once). Place the packets into the pan, and cover. Let them steam for 15-20 minutes, or until salmon is cooked through.

6. Remove from the pan and open the foil. Sprinkle with chopped parsley and wasabi mayo. Enjoy!
